History
The Gardens Lawn Tennis Club was established in June 1903 after a meeting was held by residents in the neighbourhood of Southfields Station. A statement was made by W Mitter that the proposed ground for the tennis courts should be positioned at the back of Southdean Gardens, and that it should be a tennis club for the residents, owned by the residents. No time was wasted, the courts were laid within the year and play began soon after.
Entertainment has always been important to the club, with dinner dances, quizzes and summer and winter parties high on the priority list. During the Second World War, the entertainment slowed down a bit, but today it is as much a mark of this lively welcoming club as the large number of social tennis sessions, the team tennis, multiple tournaments and the floodlighting which enables play in the dark winter months.
For those that might be interested, the club still owns copies of all the minutes of the committees back until the date it was established, along with photographs and mementoes such as the official gentleman's club tie.
Adult club sessions are well attended and we are always pleased to see new faces join in. Come along to any session, we can’t wait to welcome you to the club!
